CHAPTER FIVE
Ev
âHow are you always so perfect?â Brady asked as he relaxed into my embrace, let me steer us toward the hall. âYouâre always so patient. So understanding. How the hell do you do it? Iâm not complaining. Justâ¦I wish that I could be half the person you are with kids and Renee.â
I thought about giving flip response, but I decided that if I wanted Brady to share what was troubling him that maybe I should be honest. âIt is not because I am a good person.â
Brady laughed at that. âSure it is. Youâre the best person I know.â
I sucked in a sharp breath. âIt is because I am scared. Renee was not that far from the truth the other day. I do worry about losing you and the children. I am patient because I am scared to not be, scared that I might not be enough for you otherwise. I need to be cheerful because the alternative is giving into to all my fears.â
âOh Ev.â Brady spun us so that we were facing and tugged me close for a tight hug. âI didnât know. Weâre not going anywhere. I promise. Even if you lose your temper. Even if you get frustrated. Even if youâre not perfect. Youâll always have us.â
I hadnât realized how badly I needed to hear that and I drew in a shaky breath. I looked down as something brushed by my lower legs. Apricot nudged me again, and Brady laughed. âSee? Even the dog loves you.â
âShe loves me because I walk her at noon, and I let her eat a kebab the other day.â It was easier to make a joke than to admit how deeply his words moved me.
âAnd I love you because you are you, Ev. Not because youâre endlessly patient and understanding, but because youâre you. You love me and you make me a better person, but you donât have to be perfect for me to love you.â
âThank you,â I said simply, pressing a kiss to his mouth. âAnd you are far better than you give yourself credit for too.â
We stood there kissing in the hall until we were both breathing hard. âNow to the shower with you,â I shooed him off. âI have plans.â
âI love when you have plans,â Brady sighed happily against my lips. âLove you.â
âMe too, Brady, me too.â I gave him one last kiss before shoving him into bathroom. I had a feeling why he had wanted the kids gone, and I figured that with a bit of creativity, I could give him what he craved. What we both craved if I were being honest.
I had just finished stripping comforter from the bed and arranging things how I wanted them when Brady emerged from the shower, towel wrapped around his waist.
âOh hell yes.â His eyes went wide as he took in what Iâd laid out near a towel Iâd spread on the bedâseveral lengths of the brown grossgrain ribbon I loved seeing against his creamy flesh, the feather duster that had never once seen cleaning duty, his favorite plug, and some lube.
